Global Warming-What we can do
As young people in this world with great potential, we should do our share to cut down on greenhouse gases. "We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love,”-Mother Theresa. In order to make a difference and slow down the effect of global warming, one must start with small steps.
There are many things we can do to stop the icecaps from melting but it’s a matter of time, if the planet can do the Kyoto accord. The goal is to control carbon dioxide and other heat trapping “greenhouse gasses” from going into the atmosphere. Here are some reasons to help prevent:
1. Switch to energy efficient lighting-incandescent aren’t very effective compared to florescent lighting. Florescent lighting lasts longer, keeps nearly 700 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the air and it lowers your electricity bill.
2. Buy energy efficient appliances- for example for an energy efficient refrigerator, it would have an Energy Star Label.
3. Reduce energy needed for heating-According to the U.S. Department of Energy, heating and cooling systems in the U.S. emit over a half billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year.
4. Reduce energy needed for cooling- try to stay away from air conditioning, in the US on a hot day 1/6th of the energy comes from air conditioning
5. Buy a car that runs on carbon dioxide for example or drive less and bike more
Interesting Facts:
In countries like Canada and the US individuals release around 100 pounds of carbon dioxide every year.
